This course is for any sailor interested in building their core sailing skills. This includes becoming more proficient at sail trim and close-quarter maneuvering. It also includes improving your crew skills and working together as a team to make your vessel move more efficiently through the water.

By completing the lessons in this online class you will be ready to report to an American Sailing school for on-the-water courses, including ASA 102: Keelboat Sailing 2.

ONLINE COURSE OVERVIEW

In this class, you'll gain essential knowledge and skills for sailing effectively and safely, including specific roles on a boat, such as the skipper and crew. The class will also cover the detailed procedures for communication and coordination during critical maneuvers. Learn the responsibilities of being a skipper, how to maintain clear communication on board, and what it takes to be fully prepared for a day of sailing.

You will receive an in-depth look at boat handling, teaching you the steps for proper course and actions during different sailing maneuvers, the implications of weather helm, and the nuances of steering with a tiller extension. You will also explore sail trim concepts, learning how to manage sail shape and power through adjustments in angle of attack, depth, and twist.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This course is for any sailor who is looking to improve their sailing fundamentals including sail trim, boat handling, boat speed, and crew roles. This includes beginner sailors who have graduated ASA 101 as well as more experienced sailors who might have already earned ASA 103/104 or higher. The course will also appeal to those sailors who are interested in racing, and while the course is not a racing course, it does provide a good foundation of skills that can be used on the race course.

You will take an exam at the conclusion of the course.

Will I obtain a seal for my ASA logbook?

You will not obtain a seal for your logbook. You will, however, be awarded a Certificate of Completion that can be presented to your local sailing school as proof that you completed American Sailing's ASA 102: Keelboat Sailing 2 online prep class.
